Problems With Our Rough Cut
We created a rough cut of our music video project and came across a few problems. The first problem was the night footage as it was hardly visible due to poor lighting. To amend this problem we have decided to re-shoot the night footage and use appropriate lighting this time around and take full use of the specific camera functions in the dark. The next problem we had was the lack of shots we had. This led to our rough cut having long boring shots which is not what we wanted. To correct this we will be filming additional shots to fix the problem as we can use them as fillers so all shots wont be too long and boring for the viewers. in our rough cut we had to recycle already used clips to finish the sequence. This was not desired and therefore in the re-shoot we will be filming a new piece to fit inn so there will be no recycling of clips in the music video.

Final List of Improvement
We watched our clip over and noticed a few minor blips that we could improve to make our video better. Some of the editing needs to be made better so it flows better and takes the resemblance of a professional music video. We decided that the footage we took at night was not visible enough and so we have decided to film some of the footage again. This time, we will plan our shots better and use appropriate lighting to achieve a better video.
- Zooming In on Facebook page so we can see post
- Change the tacky footage
- Make the costume changes flow better
- Make Colour corrected footage less grainy
- Use more fades and effects
- More cuts in verses
- More FILMING REQUIRED!
New Digipak Design
We have decided to change the idea for the digipak. This is because we thought it didn't connote the idea and genre of the beat and lyrics. Instead we feel that a greater photo would be of the singer (Dan Synowiec) standing out sound a house for location. Fitting as the songs lyrics are 'like a party at my house' so is conventional to the lyrics. The rest of the band members will be standing in the lounge widow so the viewer also gets to see them and it clearly represents the whole band. Them being separate in the shot is fitting as the song lyrics tell a story about one individuals experience of his party, so the vocal point is on Dan Synowiec. Therefore he should be the one to stand out.
The band in the widow give the viewer the idea that there's a party going on as a group of people in the room connotes the party theme which is what we are hoping for.

Colour Correction
Because some of our footage was to dark to see on screen, we used the colour corrector tool on Final Cut Express. We played around with it slightly to see if we could create a better shot. the visibility was much better but the shot appears to be slightly grey, which is out of sync with our other shots.

Focused & Ambient Audiences
Focused Audience
I believe our music video would be good for a focused audience as the narrative is hugely watchable. It is very clear that there is a transformation involved and for this reason the audience can enjoy and get involved in the music video. To begin with, the video is very light hearted and amusing. But as the video progresses, It becomes more and more watchable as what we are trying to do is show how the characters are changing. Along with this, we have had to use various affects to improve the sharpness and colour in certain clips. I also think that the more and more the audience watch the video, the more they will understand.
Ambient Audience
The editing throughout our video is very quick, this would mean it would appeal to an ambient audience as well. The performance of the characters in the video is quite strong and clear which would mean the audience can dip in and out of the video. There are various scene and costume changes in the video as well which makes it a lot more interesting.
Theoretical Study Into Audience
Diversion (A form of escaping from the pressures of everyday)
In regards to our music video. We have tried to make our music video quite light and humorous at times. Along with this, the narrative in our video requires concentration to see the transformation involved. As a result the audience may get absorbed into the video.
Personal Relationships (Where the viewer may form a bond with the characters involved)
I personally believe that viewers would be able to form bonds with the characters even though it is only a three minute video. The reason being is because in our video, the whole thing is based around a transformation. For this reason, I believe the audience could feel sympathy for the portrayed characters at the start. But when the transformation occurs, perhaps they will feel happy for the characters.
Personal Identity (Where the viewer compares there life to the character)
Well, I think that the audience who would watch this video would be predominantly young adults. For this reason, the audience may relate to either side of the transformation. Or potentially feel sympathy or maybe look up to the characters involved.
Surveillance (where the media is looked upon as information about the world)
I don't really think this category is relevant to our music video as it is centered around a group of young adults who are just interested in having fun.

Trouble with Final Cut
We are experiencing problems with Final cut. We have imported a clip of a computer screen on facebook typing and it has taken 20 minutes to render. The problem is, every time we try to move the clip, we have to render it again which means we cannot edit. This is very inconvenient and time consuming.
Music Video Cuts
Wiz Khalifa - Work Hard Play Hard (Music Video)
Watching this video with have learnt how many cuts actually go into a music video and how many shots you actually need to produce a top quality music video production.
Sadly we our not a professional music video production group. So we are unable to get a cut finish as high as this standard. But we will try and emulate this with quick dynamic cuts and ensure that the lip syncs are in sync with the music. To be able to achieve this we will have to ensure we take lots of different shots from different angels then cut them together to produce a good music video
Analysis of Professional Music Video
I decided to analyse the video "Pyramids" by Frank Ocean. Within the first 15 seconds, we already had 15 different shots. The lengths, angles and distances were different. There also was jump cuts to maintain a fast paced introduction to the video. The video also used slow motion and different filters to create mysterious effects. The variety and number of shots reflects that it is a professional and a top quality video.
Technologies & Equipment Used So Far
During the filming process we used various technologies and Equipment. All of which have aided our project. When we began filming our test footage, we tried using a dolly for the tripod and camera.
We used this as we believed it would aid our filming process. In the end we opted to not use the dolly and any filming which we needed to move the camera in, we used the camera handheld.
We also used a tripod in filming and this was very useful. The reason being is because a tripod provides much steadier filming and the footage is much clearer. We used the tripod in many scenes in our project and it was hugely useful.
We also used a sony HD camcorder. This was used as the main technology in our project. This camcorder is great quality and really aided our filming. The camcorder allows us to edit or change our footage on the camera which came in very useful.
Along with this, the camcorder as well integrated with the editing software we are using which made it easy to transfer all the filming we had done.
The editing software we are using is Final Cut Express. This software has many many features which really help our editing. For example, In our filming, there are certain clips which are to dark and we can correct that with tools on Final Cut such as "colour corrector". We can also speed up or slow down shots so that we can make sure they fit in with the time of the song.
We downloaded the program "Debut" which is a video capturing software. This program allowed us to record a screenshot of Facebook, which we needed for the introduction of our music video. The program was extremely easy to use and download. Without this program, we were going to have to record the computer screen with our camera which would create an extremely amateur appearance. The use of "Debut" has helped us to create a more professional video.
We also used a variety of light sources such as torches to give our shot more light and visibility. With the help of reflectors, we could create different effects by reflecting the light of the reflectors.

Editing on The Beat
The tempo and pitch of our song is quite fast paced and upbeat and so we decided to reflect this in our editing. Editing on the beat is an extremely good way of doing this and so we tried to reflect big beats and changes in pitch in the song, with different actions and cuts in our footage. Our research showed that this creates a professional video and this is what we feel we have acheived.
Initial Problems Whilst Editing
We uploaded our footage to Final Cut Express and quickly scanned over what we had filmed. On first glimpses, our shots looked a bit too long for what we had wanted. We wanted lots of short little shots as to keep to one of the main criteria of creating a music video and one of Goodwin's Six Points.
Also, our shots in the dark were too dark as the lighting that we used was clearly not strong enough. We were totally oblivious to this when we were filming so we were slightly disappointed when we reviewed the footage. We will try and use the Colour Corrector on Final Cut to create a brighter and more visible image for our final video.

Problems That Occured During Filming
We decided to film our video project at Dan's house in Whaddon, Hertfordshire. Whilst filming, we came across a few obstacles that set us back with our filming. However, we overcame these to finally complete all of our filming on the scheduled night. We had asked one of our friends to participate in our video, but he unfortunately couldn't make it. We had to arrange for another person to fill in on such short notice, as to keep to our narrative which we had planned. Also, certain people were not willing to co-operate with our filming and so we had to leave the area sooner than anticipated. However, we resolved these issues in a professional manner and kept the filming of the video the main priority.

First Glimpses of Shots
We watched over the shots that we filmed for our music video and we noticed that we had a few problems. The shots that we took outside were extremely dark on the camera, so that the performance/lip syncing was not visible enough or the narrative which was going on around it. We will use the colour correction tool on Final Cut Express to try and create a more visible shot. We also noticed that a few of our shots were too long for that of a music video, and so we will look to cut and edit the shots with different angles that we took.
Styles of Music Video
There are various types of music video. The aim of a music video is to emphasis the artist and entice the audience into watching/ buying more of the artists material. This is why there are so many different types of music video as Artists attract the audience in different ways.
Over the years, there have been many controversial music videos but one that stands out is
Eric Prydz - Call On Me
This music video is very explicit. So much so that there were two versions made, an X rated version and a soft version. The soft version is still obviously intended for a male audience with many attractive women wearing little clothing and dancing in a very provocative manor. The X Rated version is very similar except there are no clothes at all. This music video is so successful as a result of this. It has attracted a lot of attention and as a result has greatly boosted the artists recognition.
There have also been very alternative music videos which have also attracted a lot of attention. For example.
Skrillex - Equinox
This music video is very strange. The artist himself is known for being a very alternative person. The video involves a child being followed by an antagonist character who we assume is a pedophile. They eventually arrive at a tube station where the little girl turns into some form of monster/alien. This aspect of the video makes it hugely alternative and as a result this video has had a huge 85 million hits on YouTube.
There are many Intertextual Music Videos for example
Katy Perry - Last Friday Night
There is a lot of Intertextuality used in this video. For example, there are various actors and artists in the video. Rebecca Black is involved in the video as well as bands such as Hanson. This technique makes the videos a lot more popular as it will attract audiences who maybe have not heard the artists material.

Mood Wall
This is the mood wall for the creation of our music video. we will start from the bottom of the mood wall with the xbox 360 and the nerd photo of Dan Synowiec; which is the idea of our artist being a nerd, not going out on the weekend staying inn playing video games etc.
As you travel up you see the man with the cardboard box cut out on his head with the diffrent cut in iteams of clothing. This influenced us with the idea of gradually changing the group of nerds to cool kids from shoes to hair in separate cut shots changing an item of clothing in each shot and the sticking all the shots together. Than we have the DJ and speakers just to represent music.
This is followed by some girls as it's what all teenage boys dream about.
Than drinks as it wouldn't be a party without drinks.
Lastly a picture of a crazy party which the boys are heading too.
All of the pictures in this mood wall has played a part and influenced our ideas in the making of the music video and production.
Mise-En-Scene
We looked at the typical mise-en-scene of the rock/pop genre. We will try and incorporate our findings from the research into our music video to give it a more professional edge.
Colour - The colour used in rock/pop music videos tend to be quite bright and uplifting for the viewers. the colour matches the tempo of the songs which in this genre, are mostly high-tempo, upbeat music.
Costume - The clothes worn by the artists in this genre are very up to date with the latest fashion of that time period.
Lighting - The lighting, like the colour, is always bright and loud, as to match the song pace and pitch.
Props - The props used in these music videos tend to be instruments which they play e.g. focus on the guitarist. Also, if there is a prop that can match the lyrics, there will be.
Setting - The setting in these videos tends to be quite public areas; places where everyone has access to. if the song is intended for a younger audience, the video is usually shot in daylight where as in a video aimed at a slightly older audience, filming at night time is often used.
Make Up - There is not much to say about make up in rock/pop videos. It is worn by the female artists to enhance their appearance and attractiveness to viewers.

Lyrics Analysis
Orson - "Ain't No Party"
Oh, next light bust a right.
It's not gonna be too hard.
If there's no parking on the street pull up on their front yard.
Don't bring no vodka, or whisky,
we've got everything you need it.
Just bring a pair of your dancing shoes and get down to this beat.
Let's go down.
Wash that sugar down.
You gotta realize it
Because there aint no party
like the party going on in my house.
Better believe that it's gonna be the biggest night of the year.
Because there aint no party
like the party going on in my house,
but it would be so much better if you were only here.
... Mmmm, oh, that's right. Mmmm,
prom night, Oscar night, got all that bullshit beat.
There's twenty girls for every single boy
and their crazy from this heat.
We'll take you up and down and everywhere in between.
Mom and Dad are out of town all week,
so you better get on your feet.
Let's go down. Wash that sugar down.
Because there aint no party like the party going on in my house.
Better believe that it's gonna be the biggest night of the year,
because there aint no party like the party going on in my house,
but it would be so much better if you were only here.
Mmmm.
Everything you ever wanted from this life is gonna happen right now.
Oooh, Those loves turn to highs,
And the temperatures rise,
Better reach for the skies
And raise up the ceiling.
[Guitar Solo]
Because there aint no party like the party going on in my house.
Better believe that its gonna be the biggest night of the year.
Because there aint no party like the party going on in my house,
but it would be so much better if you were only here.
If only you were here...
What These Lyrics Show In The Mood And Representation Of The Artists
The lyrics show the artists are in a good mood "Because there aint no party like the party going on in my house". He's enjoying having his house party and is upbeat. The lyrics represent a party mood and this is shown dominantly through the lyrics, an example being "Just bring a pair of your dancing shoes and get down to this beat", showing he wants to dance and listen to music. This is backed up further by "Wash that sugar down" implying drinking sweet alcoholic drinks e.g. vodka red bull etc. which all together connotes partying.
Test Footage
This is a short preview of some clips we have tried at college. In this clip, we tried out various shots and angles. We used some effects and edited it all together with our chosen song. This is not how we intend our final video to come out, but the exercise has been useful as it has allowed us to try out different effects etc before we film our final product.
Location of Filming
We will be filming at Dan's house in Whaddon, Cambridgeshire. Whaddon is a quiet village so there should not be any interference such as cars, excess lighting and distractions. The location is convenient as Connor lives nearby and Danny has the easiest access to get there.
This is the street where we will be filming our outdoors scenes on.
This is Dan's house where we will be filming inside and out of. In our filming we will have an establishing shot of the "house party", which will be going on inside of Dan's house. It will appear that there is a party going on inside but really there will be no party.
Narrative Change
When we presented our ideas for creating the music video of Orson - "Ain't No Party", a few members questioned whether the camera would be at risk at the house party or if in fact, the shots taken will be of poor quality. We thought about this as a group and agreed that it would be best to change the narrative for our video. Instead of filming at a house party, we were filming a group of friends preparing for a house party. Some of the ideas from the previous concept have still been retained but the majority is a different narrative. This is how the new video will go...
- Starts at home with the boys just hanging around in a "uncool manner"- playing monopoly, xbox, drinking fizzy drinks etc.
- One of the boys receives a text from a girl inviting them to a house party
- They become excited as this is unusual for them
- They get ready and are transformed into cool, and fashionable attractive young men- they get changed, do their hair etc.
- The filming will take place inside the house and will continue following them as they walk to the house party.
- The boys reach the house at the end of the song and as it fades, they enter.
We believe that the new narrative still maintains the "house party" theme, but is also a more suitable and convenient structure for us to create our music video.

Shot Lists and Storyboards
We created shot lists and storyboards to appropriately plan the narrative of our video project. In detail, we described the shot angles, timings and information which were essential for creating a professional video. We assessed the song and decided on what shots to shoot by matching up the sound with an appropriate shot and angle. Therefore we could reflect the lyrics and song in our music video; one of Goodwin's six points.
The storyboards helped us to imagine how our shot would be filmed e.g. positioning, distance and people in the shot. This was useful when we came to film our video as we had already thought the shot through and so it didn't take too much time organising the shot.

Lighting Research
We watched 3 videos on YouTube which explained the using of lights and filters when creating a music video.
From watching these videos, we learnt that the use of lights is very important for filming a professional video. Lots of different factors contribute to the lighting effects such as intensity, brightness and angles. Using filters is also a good way of creating a more professional shot and so we will consider using these in our final recordings. As some of our filming will take place at night, we learnt that we needed an extra light on the main focus of the shot to enhance the visibility of the artist. This takes the focus off background materials such as windows and walls and keeps it on the main focus, e.g. the artist.

Ancillary Plan

Plan for Digipack
We plan on having a panoramic shot of all the actors in the music video, all sitting down on a sofa as the inside of the Digipack. For the front cover, we plan on having a similar picture, but more in a different style and in a different location. We have taken inspiration from the album 'The Beatles - Abbey Road'
Contacting The Artist
We contacted Kevin Roentgen, the songwriter and producer for Orson, to ask for permission to be allowed to use his song in our music video. We asked Kevin Roentgen, as sadly Orson themselves are no longer in existence as the band split up in 2007. This is the tweet we sent Kevin Roentgen...
Roentgen replied and gave us permission, via Twitter, to use the track for our music video project.
Filming Date
We plan to film on the Wednesday the 10th of October and will book the camera for this date, The reason being is because this date is convenient for all the people involved in filming. It also allows
