Feedback from Presentation

Question

How will we take care of the camera at the party?

How will we be able to control the people at the party?

Response

We plan to choose selected friends to star in the video as they are trustworthy. It will be set in the party scene but only a selected few will feature and thus the camera will remain safe. Also the people we have chosen are responsible and the filming will be controlled.

Conventions and Presentation of Your Genre

Conventions of Your Genre and How You Present These Conventions

The conventions of a pop/rock genre tend to be: very upbeat, aimed at teenagers, focus on musical instruments and a narrative through out.

In our music video we plan to incorporate the constant narrative and teenage appeal as three nerds playing board games then throw a house party and become the coolest kids in their class and the viewers see all the inbetween. To add our video is planned to be very upbeat and postive with viewers feeling uplifted after watching. It also encourages dancing and having fun.

Previous Student Work

2 Examples of Student Ideas That Is Stylistic And Interesting

Kyle Raps Hard Knock Children

This videos costume is stylistic to our own music video ideas for costumes and an urban/individual look. In addition, we thought their setting's for each shot of their videos were interesting and enjoyed watching their music video and hope to have as interesting settings as this one.

Bubble Pop

The 'Bubble Pop' music video is stylistic to our own music video idea. Our videos both relate as there is a party theme to the video with people dancing and having fun. In addition we thought the flashing red and blue lights effect made the video interesting and we are considering adding similar effects to our own music video. However we thought the lighting on the main focus in the video could be enhanced to give it a more professional look. In addition their chosen location is similar to ours although diffrent in the sense that we our going to actually hold a house party and film it oppose to using editing to make it look like a party. Finally the mise-en-scene of the costumes of the people performing will be similar; trendy, stylish modern clothing.

Potential Ideas- "Ain't No Party" (Orson)

Party Theme

We would like to pitch to you our potential music video ideas for the song "Ain't No Party" by Orson. Here are a few of the ideas we have come up with so far...

-Ironic start to the music video, small group of people being depicted as uncool/ geeky etc.

-Starts as a screen recording of Facebook

-Group of around three people playing board games drinking fizzy drinks etc

-When the song begins building up, more and more people start turning up

-Various scene changes involved around the house

-Use of various camera angles and shot types

-Mise-en-scene changes as the song builds up - more vibrant colours and higher pace of editing

We watched two videos that we gained inspiration from; a Katy Perry video and an Asher Roth video.

Target Audience

Our target audience is young adults and teens as they can relate to the house party theme and also, that is who the pop/rock genre is aimed at. Their expectations will be to see lots of cheerful and happy people having a good time - which is associated with the pop/rock genre. We are hoping to meet these expectations as this theme also matches the high pace and exciting tone of the song.

Auteur Theory

Auteur Theory - Sam Brown

Auteurism was created by Francis Tuffaurt in 1954.
Auteurism refers to the Auteur (French work for Author) and the idea is that the filming in the music video should reflect the directors vision for the video, thus making he/she an Auteur.

Danny chose to analyse Hype Williams.

- Use lots of colours for texts, credits etc.
- Always has Women in his videos.
- Unordinary Locations
- Some are directed like a film.
- Consistent themes - 'Hype Williams Style'

Dan chose to analyse Sam Brown

Sam Brown is a director that the label of an auteur could be applied. He has a very clear style in his videos which really define him. The artist is always the focus of the video and he often has them performing in abstract locations with often random objects involved in the set.

Developing Photoshop Skills

To improve on our Photoshop skills, we watched a Photoshop Tutorial on youTube to see if we could recreate a iTunes gift card-style image. Here is the tutorial we watched...

We then created these images...

and...

We developed these images by using different tools and methods such as the burn tool, dodge tool, layering and brush effects. We now feel comfortable with using this program and can use it effectively in future tasks.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

Richard Dyer's star theory states that "a star is someone who's interest in their personal life outweighs the interest in their profession'. A star image is constructed out of a rage of materials e.g. films, videos, posters and magazines. The stars represent shared cultural values e.g. being slim, a certain fashion trend or religion. We create our own aspirations of what we wish to look like from these stars. Some stars support hegemony by conforming to the ideal. Celebrity magazines such as "Heat" and "Closer", compare us or encourage us to conform to the ideal. Star persona is fragile and can be broken at any time.  We created two mood boards to illustrate the star images of two celebrities; Beyonce and Justin Bieber.

Goodwin's Six Points

We studied Goodwin's six points on what makes a good music video. We analysed four music videos and tried to link Goodwin's points to them. We created a Powerpoint presentation to show our evidence.
